For today’s #dailysong we look at a classic from the turn of the century. (Oh lord, I’m calling a song from 2000 a classic. Am I getting old?) Bon Jovi was, imo, a master of his craft. His songs really spoke to everyone who heard them. Many of his classics from this to “Livin’ on a Prayer” show someone who is in touch with the common person and can portray relatable circumstances. This song, in particular, came down to the feelings that we hold for moments; where we feel lost and alone and all we can do is take what we got and move forward. Funny enough, this was a message that Bon Jovi was surprised became so popular as he initially felt it was very “self-indulgent.” But as it turns out, it’s a theme everybody can relate to. It also has many staples and references of his work, making it a sort of culmination of his talents in a way. Everything from the talkbox (the thing that makes the “waah waah” sound at the beginning), to a reference to Tommy and Gina, and even referencing Frank Sinatra, who Bon Jovi loved. The whole thing comes as a natural evolution of the band’s sound, even though they open by stating it’s not their usual kind of song. And while that is true, it’s still a true Bon Jovi song, and no one would argue otherwise. So anyway, he’s “It’s My Life,” by Bon Jovi.
“It's my life, it's now or never. I ain't gonna live forever. I just want to live while I'm alive.”
