This #dailysong is one of those where it sounds cheery until you listen to the words, like “Jump” by Van Halen or “99 Luftballoons.” (I’ll cover those, don’t worry.) But here, the deception works on 2 levels. The first is the usual, sounds-happy-but-is-really-depressing trope (yes, that’s a trope). The second has to do with why it sounds like that. This is another song about bullying, but this time has to do with something I personally relate to. It’s about putting on a happy face despite what goes on around you. Be the joke, laugh it up, and, whatever you do, don’t cry. Don’t show them they get to you, cause then they keep going. And while that particularly never worked for me, where it has worked is keeping people from being worried about me. It’s only recently that I’ve been able to share my feelings instead of bottling them up. But for so long, if something was wrong and someone asked, the smile and “I’m fine” came so quick it was almost pavlovian. It’s part of the reason I’m so glad to have found the fandom. I can be free and open here without fear of retribution. So anyway, go and listen to “Circus Hop,” by YonKaGor.
“So, sing along it’s such a silly song. The cackling carousel, it spins and never stops. The acrobat who’s waiting at the top should do a circus hop.”
