Experimental techniques… question mark?

So for this #dailysong we have something I discovered forever ago, but am now only really starting to understand. It’s a song about an abusive relationship (I swear this isn’t all I listen to) in which the protagonist knows the relationship isn’t worth it, but also can’t convince themselves to drop it because of how it makes them feel. While even though they have no control in the relationship, they love the high moments. I personally feel an attachment to the line “Don’t wanna have to lose all that I’ve compromised to feel another high. I’ve got to keep it down tonight.” I was much of the same in my relationship. The high moments where everything was nice and happy were so great that I was willing to put up with all the bad moments. But as I came to realize I needed to end it, I had to keep reminding myself of the bad times. That even though things may have seemed nice at times, they were only fleeting moments. I had to recognize what the relationship was outside of them. And it wasn’t okay. This song, lyrically, comprises much of that.

Now, what else about the song can I bring up? Well, how about that backing track? That unnatural sound that comes up right at the start and covers most of the song. After some quick research, I found that it turns out it’s *checks notes* the front’s voice “sampled and f***ed up.” Sounds about right. But yeah, this is a sound that I really enjoy because it’s something you could only really make in a recording studio. It reminds me of the latter days of the Beatles where they began experimenting with different ways to make music like the reverse symbol on “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

Now I’m not saying these guys are the next Beatles. They’re good, but no one is that good. But they certainly have an amazing song on their hands. And it succeeds lyrically, musically, and even visually with the music video. So anyway, here’s “King,” by Years & Years.

“And, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. I was a king under your control. And, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh. I wanna feel like you've let me go.”
