((TRIGGER WARNING: The topic of suicide is discussed below.))

Thank you, Evan Hansen.

So for #dailysong I usually try and go for an official source for the link, with few exceptions (See my Red Like Roses post). That was a problem today, and not for the reason you think. The problem is THERE ARE SO MANY OFFICIAL VERSIONS!!! Like, seriously guys! What the hell!? There’s the Original Broadway Recording, the version released to celebrate the National Tour, the Virtual Choir made up of a bunch of covers, the OTHER virtual choir of the original Broadway cast, and the 360-degree version. I reiterate: What the hell!? So I went for the Original Broadway Recording for one important reason, the comment section…… Let me explain. So in this song, it starts off with Evan trying to give a speech at a rally for “The Connor Project,” an online group dedicated to remembering a young man who killed himself and to affirm the fact that everyone matters. He stumbles at first trying to get through a prepared speech and then the song begins proper as he sings from the heart. Afterwards, the speech is placed online and gets shared around and you hear the reactions to it from around the world be it comments, posts, and even news reports. Everyone comes together with this affirmation that everyone matters, and it touches something within me. I don’t cry often, but I cry twice during this show. This is one of those moments. There’s also a touching moment where Zoe Murphy, the sister of Connor who at first wasn’t upset, or rather didn’t know how to feel about her brother’s death due to their strained (at best) relationship, comes around and recognizes that she does indeed miss her brother and that he mattered. I guess all I have left to say is, thank you, Evan Hansen.

“Even when the dark comes crashing through. When you need a friend to carry you. And when you're broken on the ground. You will be found.”
