My least favourite subreddit? That's a hard one to answer. Extremely hard. There are so many terrible subreddits out there.
I think that the one that makes me the most irate most often is r/iamverysmart, though. Too much stuff is posted there that just doesn't make any sense. Like, why are you posting someone there who correctly told you off for misidentifying a logical fallacy in their argument? They're right. You're just salty.
Also, I see a lot of posts of people who are just minding their own business but saying 'arrogant' things like 'I understand my limits and thus know how to push myself to peak performance.' Like, no, that's not r/iamverysmart you absolute dimwits. That's just someone who knows their limits. r/iamverysmart is, like, a 14-year-old kid trying to show his knowledge of nuclear fission and failing to explain it even conceptually. ("It's when you smash two photons together and they suck energy into them so you can make perpetual motion machines -- pick up a physics book some time, idiot." <-- Example of r/iamverysmart behaviour.)
The problem that I have identified lately is that the subreddit is over a million strong at this point, and highly-rated posts which DO NOT DESERVE TO BE HIGHLY-RATED are taken as the gold standard. That example back there of someone posting another person there because they talked about logical fallacies? 5k upvotes. What is this shit?
An NO, not everyone who uses words that you don't understand is r/iamverysmart material. I remember seeing a guy posted there once who was using 'big words' to describe his occupation. He described it accurately and had absolutely no reason to be posted there. THOUSANDS OF UPVOTES. How can these people truly think that this behaviour is r/iamverysmart material?
It's just a way to shut down someone that you dislike/a way to discredit someone's opinion/logic when you disagree with them. Like, oooo, if they dare use precise vocab, BOOM, DEEEEEEFEATED. Oooo, if they dare talk about philosophy or science, BOOM. DEFEATED. How DARE they talk about subjects that they have studied and have a decent grasp on in front of me -- I'll show them! I'll post them to r/iamverysmart so that others can see how truly idiotic they are for making a comment like "I don't like it when others talk down to me. I'm a very smart individual and I generally understand things very quickly. Please don't talk down to me. Just explain it to me as you understand it and I'm sure that I'll understand it quickly too."
How DARE they say something like that. Oh YeSsS, I shall have my REVENGE on them for their absolute ARROGANCE.
Do you see my point about the posts just being made because of insecurities?
There was a point in the past when the posts WERE legitimate. They WERE that 14-year-old kid who'd never taken a physics course pretending that he knew how nuclear fission worked. They WERE that 26-year-old neckbeard without a formal education pretending that he knew all about Kant and what the word 'garrulous' meant.
But now? It's an absolute cesspool.
Anyway, this is just my Thoughts of the Day. Check yourself before you condemn someone else for perceived stupidity. Ask yourself if they might be right. Ask yourself if they might have a point. Always make allowances. And know your limits. And don't get mad at someone for being right. It's unbecoming of all of us.
