What’s this? A cover on #dailysong ? Yeah, so I want to avoid covers as much as possible here, but I will make exceptions for when I feel the cover is better than the original. Such as Aretha Franklin’s cover of “Respect” by Otis Redding where the added bridge really pumps up the whole thing to the next level. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about.
So why this cover in particular. Well, it’s a couple of things, really. First off, we still have one of the original singers, funny enough. Because of this, we don’t lose the duet aspect of the whole thing. Second, and this may be just a me thing, but having Caleb play the role of the child here makes it clearer to me which part is done by who. My hearing isn’t the greatest, especially when it comes to telling apart voices. (Seriously, the first time I listened to the Hamilton soundtrack I kept getting everyone confused.) So Caleb helped a lot with that. Thirdly, and this is where it really sets itself above the original, is a change in a line. Caleb really doesn’t like to swear, and even though the closest thing to it in here is them saying “Effing” he still wanted to avoid it. So he changed the line “Now I’m trapped inside a nightmare every single effing day” to “Now I’m trapped inside a nightmare that I wake to every day.” And that takes the role he’s performing that in the original was focused on how angry they were that their mother left them and adds in a feeling of fear about the world they were left in. Some of my favorite songs are just about releasing strong emotions, and this one with a single line change managed to enhance the original emotion by sharing another.
As for the rest of the song, it’s sooooooooo good. I’m also a sucker for good instrumentals, which is basically what the entire first half is. And the fact that we can have 4-ish minutes of just instruments without getting bored, really speaks to how good this one is. Otherwise, this song on the whole is about two people, a parent and a child. The child is furious at the parent for leaving them when the parent died, and the parent is regretful for leaving their child and is trying to explain that they had no other choice. Anger and regret are two very strong emotions that most people could relate to. And the way they’re coupled and expressed makes the whole thing just one amazing piece of music. I just don’t know what to say, so here it is.
“Red like roses. Fills my head with dreams that find me. Always closer to the emptiness and sadness that has come to take the place. Of. You.”
