Going from a 2-minute short song to a 6-minute long song we got some classic Rolling Stones action. There’s a lot of interesting stuff I learned about these guys in college. For example, when they first started out they tried very hard to be like the Beatles, right down to the clean haircuts and matching suits. And oh boy did they do a 180 on that. To be fair, the lead singer himself said that “There is only one The Beatles” and he was right about that. So they completely rebranded themselves to the earliest version of what we would consider a proper rock star. While the Beatles were borderline pop stars, these guys were the down and dirty rock stars of the 60s. And I think this song portrays that well, using the POV of the literal devil for some political commentary on humanity, it was a very shocking song at the time, and would still be considered so now in some circles. Another fun fact, Mick Jagger refuses to perform this song anymore because he believes it to be cursed. And to be fair, every time they performed it something bad would happen, and the last time they did someone got shot. So I’d probably feel pretty cursed myself. There’s so much I could do to break down this musically, but really so many have already done that. So just go listen to it and have a good time. Here’s “Sympathy for the Devil,” by The Rolling Stones.
“Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name. But what’s puzzling you is the nature of my game.”
