For today’s #dailysong I’m picking out a classic favorite of mine. This song is interesting. And by interesting, I mean LOOOOOOOONG. The thing is just over 9 minutes, and over half of it is just instrumentals. But damn, does it work! The song is simple, it’s about a man who doesn’t want to be tied down by his relationship. So he decides to “free” himself. It starts off fairly calm and relaxing, picking up a bit at the chorus before dropping back down. If you don’t know what’s coming, it can be a bit of a grind, but if you do it’s a total tease fest for what has to be one of the best instrumentals I’ve ever heard. And the build-up as the music becomes louder and more intense right before it hits is weirdly exciting. Also, fun fact about its use in Kingsmen (seriously, if you haven’t seen that, check it out. It’s an amazing feat of fight choreography, but also quick gore warning for it) the entire scene was originally going to be a lot longer, featuring more of the song, and not cut away like it does in the end result. But the whole thing made test audiences uncomfortable, so they cut it down to about 4 minutes and cut it up by shifting focus to other characters. Anyway, without further adieu, here’s “Free Bird,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
“Lord, I can’t change. Won’t you fly high, free bird.”
