Buyer:
- have a reference of your oc. If you don’t, that’s the first thing you should buy.
- have that reference be in flat colours. It’s easier for the artist to Luca exact colours that way.
- an artist can deny your commission for any reason, and they don’t have to justify it. If they say no, it’s no. Walk away.
- have picture references of clothes, expressions, poses and places. It’s a lot simpler than writing a whole background story.
- don’t ever ask an artist to copy another artists style. That’s plain disrespectful.
- if you don’t like the result, just don’t buy it again. The work was done so it’s right to pay for it.
Artists:
- always ask for some payment upfront. At least partially.
- think what you will do and will not do. Write it down and publish it. Add a note that you reserve the right to deny a commission for whatever reason.
- don’t spend the money until the customer accepted the final work. If worse comes to worse, a refund can get you out of trouble.
- have examples of what you’re offering
- make sure to clarify if you will do sketch corrections or not
- if you end up doing more work than expected, don’t charge more unless previously agreed — time management and estimations are your responsibility, unless you decide to charge by hour (But this would scare clientele away)
