Funny story... This did actually happen to me at one point. About a week or two ago, I was at an air-and-space museum on a date with my romantic partner (who is also a furry), and we saw three guys wearing facemasks that had animal print on them. The masks were clearly made by a furry artist. I walked up to them and said, "I really like your masks! are you guys furries?" They were kinda nervous at first, but I then showed them a pic of my fursona and said, "thats ok because i'm one too!" we struck up a conversation about furries, and as it turns out, two of them were new furs who didn't have fursonas yet, and the third one appeared to be guiding them on their journey through the fandom (his fursona was a panther).

The context here is that we somehow got into talking about conventions (bear in mind, my parents are completely disconnected from these things, so seeing age 50+ people very familiar with this is highly unusual to me) and somehow got into the discussion about furries. I know people who own fursuits that will not interact with the fandom, period, and my friend who was talking about it mentioned how a few people she knew took pictures in a convention with people in fursuits. She decided to inform them about the fandom, they did their research and then scrubbed their Social Media of it.
