Playing Ty the Tasmanian Tiger "HD" is another reminder to why having unique protagonist is so important for me. For me, a character design starts with the appearance, and a good appearance can help boost how likable a character is for me. I wouldn't say a lot of characters I in Ty the Tasmanian Tiger or Spyro or Crash Bandicoot are all that deep, but they have a unique charm to them that I struggle to find in the protagonist and friendly characters of the Mario franchise (aside from Yoshi), which might be one of the reasons why I never cared for Super Mario Brothers.
