Next #dailysong is “Check Yes Juliet” and OH BOY is this a fun one! First, it’s one of those where you can recognize the song just from the first few notes. And I don’t know why, but those kinds are always my favorite. Probably because they’re generally more unique than others? I dunno, food for thought. But regardless, here we have a song about young love (aw) and a disapproving family (less aw). What I love about songs like this, is that they can take a single word (in this case Juliet) and use that to convey everything we need to know. Romeo and Juliet are only the two most famous tragic lovers in storytelling, so it’s easy to know what this means. “Juliet” in this song is a girl whose family disapproves of the boy she likes, and the boy wants to get her to run away with him. And that’s it. That’s the song. Everything else just builds upon this single idea. Now the music video gives a specific idea as to why Juliet’s family is disapproving, but the great thing about the song is that it’s not specific if you just focus on the words. They can be applied to any couple for any reason, which adds to mass appeal while still being specific enough to give off real emotion. It’s a pretty good balance all things considered. Anyway, I’ve blabbed enough. Here’s “Check Yes Juliet,” by We the Kings.
“Run, baby run, don't ever look back. They'll tear us apart if you give them the chance. Don't sell your heart, don't say we're not meant to be. Run, baby run, forever we'll be. You and me.”
