Okay, so first #dailysong is a fun one. If you existed on the internet at all in 2015/2016 you’ve heard of Hamilton. This song is the first draft of the song “Burn” from the musical that was released on a special album a few years after the show was on Broadway, and oh my LAWD this is soooooo goooood! Like, I love this so much better than the original and I wish they’d kept it in. I believe Lin-Manuel Miranda said one of the reasons he cut it was because he felt it was too reactionary and he wanted to give Eliza more agency. But at the same time, THE SASS ON THIS SONG!!! Every single word and verse just oozes with all the pain and frustration that Eliza has built up over the years of having to deal with Hamilton’s BS. In my opinion, the best lines on “Burn” are some of the weaker lines on this song. I especially love how they play with verse structure. Throughout the song, there are hard stops on the word “don’t” as though she were telling Hamilton himself to stop whatever it is he was gonna do in the show, which then turns into a more complete sentence with the rest of the line. They then take this one step further at the very end where the hard stop ends a thought and finishes off the song. But even though it’s a hard stop, we’re so used to that word being the beginning of a line that we expect it to move forward, leaving us wanting more. And so the only option is to go back and listen to it over and over. Needless to say, I’ve heard this song a lot. XD Anyway, here’s “First Burn” from Hamildrop. (Yes, that is the name of the album.)
“And when the time comes; explain to the children; the pain and embarrassment; you put their mother through. When will you learn; they are your legacy; we are your legacy. If you thought you were mine; Don’t.”
